When your HVAC system encounters problems, it’ll often let you know by making some strange and unusual noises. But sometimes a furnace will run into trouble and not make a peep. That’s why it’s important to be aware of the silent signs of a furnace that is struggling.

Although things like cold spots and decreased airflow can be much harder to detect than a loud banging noise coming from your furnace, by reading through this list you’ll become aware of things to be on the lookout for. Here are 5 silent signs that mean you need furnace repair.

1. Burner Flame Color

If you own a gas furnace, you should periodically check the color of the burner flame. You can check this whenever you replace the air filter. Gas furnaces have a peephole where you can inspect the color of the burner flame. It should be a bright steady blue color.

If it’s flickering or if it’s orange, red, or yellow, this is something that should be checked soon. it indicates that there is an issue with the combustion process. Not only will this result in higher utility bills, but it’s also a potential safety hazard if it continues unchecked.

2. Cold Spots

Cold spots in certain rooms are something that many homeowners will just accept as one of the “quirky” characteristics of their homes. However, cold spots throughout the house indicate that your furnace isn’t working at peak performance.

If your furnace was properly sized for your home, it should be able to heat the entirety of your home. Don’t suffer through cold spots any longer. Let us investigate and see if we can remedy this issue for you so you can enjoy all the spaces in your home.

3. Increased Utility Bills

Although you might emit some groans of annoyance over a high utility bill, this is another silent sign that your furnace needs help. If your utility bills have gone up and this increase can’t be explained any other way, it’s a surefire sign that your furnace’s efficiency is struggling.

4. Lukewarm Air

This is something that will be hard to recognize unless you’re specifically checking for it. So go ahead and check it now. Hold your hand up to one of the events in your home while the furnace is running. The air should feel decidedly hot, not cool or lukewarm. If it doesn’t feel hot, schedule service so we can investigate what’s causing this.

5. Decreased Airflow

Decreased airflow is another silent and sneaky sign of a furnace that needs to be checked out. The first thing you can do is to replace the air filter and see if that improves the output.
