Save Energy With Your HVAC System

Brown's Heating and CoolingAs much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. Making smart decisions about your home’s heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system can have a significant effect on your utility bills. Energy Star Heating and Cooling Systems often cost more to buy, but they save you money in the long run due to reduced energy usage. Here are a few tips to save energy with your heating and cooling system:

Have your HVAC system tuned up at least once a year.

  • Change your filter regularly. During heavy use months (winter and summer), if the filter looks dirty after a month, change it! At a minimum, change the filter every three months. A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool.
  • Install a programmable thermostat. Through proper use of programmed settings, a programmable thermostat can save you about $180 every year in energy costs.
  • Seal your heating ducts. Ducts that move air from a forced air furnace or central air conditioner are often big energy wasters. Sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20 percent.
  • Finally, install a new Energy Star furnace or air conditioner. Replacing your old system can cut your annual energy bill by $200 and sometimes more!
